From LoadFlex to Smart Energy Hubs – Operationalising Grid-Integrated HVAC&R Flexibility at Scale
Room 109 | Level 1
19/11/2026, 1:30 pm-1:50 pm
This presentation outlines how Shell Energy is enabling intelligent, grid-interactive buildings through scalable LoadFlex solutions focused on HVAC&R—the largest controllable load. Under the ARENA-funded Smart Energy Hubs project, ~21.5 MW of flexible demand is being deployed across sites by integrating HVAC, refrigeration, batteries, and onsite generation into a coordinated, data-driven control framework.
NOW: Real-world insights highlight challenges such as legacy BMS integration, data limitations, and stakeholder alignment, alongside demonstrated peak demand reduction and maintained comfort.
NEW: A whole-of-site orchestration model aggregates multiple flexible assets to optimise performance and unlock market value.
NEXT: Builds toward portfolio-level aggregation and participation in advanced energy markets, positioning buildings as active grid assets supporting a resilient, low-carbon system.
