Every Smart Building is a Grid Asset: Learnings and Insights from a Large-Scale Flexibility Initiative

Working with industry partners, CSIRO has recently completed a large-scale energy flexibility pilot through the Digital Infrastructure for Energy Flexibility (DIEF) initiative. This presentation will share key learnings and insights from the project that investigated flexibility potential of more than 200 buildings. The talk will highlight the critical role of digital readiness, asset-level data, and robust data management in enabling buildings to participate in emerging flexibility markets. It will demonstrate how building and asset data can be used to estimate flexibility potential, measure delivered flexibility, and quantify the reliability, or firmness, of flexible resources.

Drawing on real-world case studies the talk will touch upon technical, operational barriers encountered during implementation and provide insights into how building owners, technology providers, and energy market participants can unlock flexibility from buildings.
